Exhibitor FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nonterritorial?

Nonterritorial is a global network for circulating physical exhibitions of moving image art. We use blockchain technology not for speculation, but as transparent infrastructure that pays artists fairly and enables anyone to host professional exhibitions.

How is this different from NFTs?

NFTs are designed for speculation—creating artificial scarcity to drive trading and price appreciation. Nonterritorial makes speculation technically impossible by disabling all transfer functions in our smart contracts. Instead of selling ownership, we facilitate licensing for actual exhibition experiences. You earn money from use, not from hype.

Do I need to understand blockchain to participate?

No. You'll need a cryptocurrency wallet to receive payments (we'll help you set one up), but you don't need to understand blockchain technology. The system is designed to be invisible—you submit exhibitions, they get licensed, you get paid.

Is this only for video art?

We focus on moving image work—video, film, digital animation, time-based media, and similar forms. The key criterion is work that benefits from physical exhibition context rather than just online viewing.

Submission Questions

What kind of exhibitions do you accept?

We look for curated exhibitions (not single works) that:

  • Feature moving image content

  • Can tour effectively to diverse venues

  • Have clear curatorial concepts

  • Don't require extremely specialized equipment

  • Work in various space configurations

How long does the review process take?

Typically 2-4 weeks from complete application to decision. We'll contact you if we need additional information.

What if my application is rejected?

We provide feedback on why an application wasn't accepted. Common reasons include:

  • Incomplete documentation

  • Requirements too specialized for touring

  • Rights issues needing resolution

  • Work better suited for other distribution models

You're welcome to reapply with revisions.

Can I submit work that's been shown elsewhere?

Yes. We don't require premiere or exclusivity. Work that's been exhibited in galleries, festivals, or museums is welcome. The network gives it new life and ongoing circulation.

Do I need representation?

No. You don't need a gallery, agent, or any intermediary. You work directly with the network.

Financial Questions

How much can I earn?

It varies by exhibition and licensing activity. A single exhibition might generate €12,000-30,000+ annually depending on how often it's licensed. Artists with multiple exhibitions in the network can build substantial ongoing income. See Revenue & Payments for detailed projections.

When do I get paid?

Instantly. When a host pays a license fee, the smart contract automatically distributes your 40% share. No waiting 30-60-90 days. No invoicing. The payment appears in your wallet within seconds of the transaction.

What currency do I receive?

Payments are processed on the Nonterritorial blockchain and distributed instantly. We're implementing fiat payment options so hosts can pay in EUR or USD without handling cryptocurrency directly.

Do I need to pay taxes?

Yes. Income from Nonterritorial is taxable in most jurisdictions. We provide complete transaction records for your accounting. Consult a tax professional for guidance specific to your situation.

Are there any fees?

No fees are taken from your payments. The 40% artist share is calculated from the gross license fee. There's no platform fee, no transaction fee, no membership fee on the artist side.

Rights Questions

Do I give up ownership of my work?

No. You grant a non-exclusive license for the network to facilitate exhibition licensing. You retain all rights—copyright, reproduction, distribution, exhibition, sale, everything. See Exhibition Rights for details.

Can I still sell my work through galleries?

Yes. Participation in Nonterritorial doesn't affect your ability to sell work through any other channel.

Can I remove my exhibition from the network?

Yes, with 90 days notice. Existing licenses are honored until expiration, then your exhibition is delisted.

What happens if someone pirates my work?

Our verification system monitors for unauthorized use. If piracy is detected, we pursue takedowns and can pursue legal action. Hosts who violate terms lose network access permanently.

Technical Questions

What file formats do you accept?

Standard professional formats:

  • ProRes 422/4444 (preferred)

  • H.264/H.265 at high bitrate

  • Resolution: 1080p minimum, 4K preferred

  • Frame rates: 24, 25, 30, or 60fps

Specific requirements depend on your exhibition's needs.

Do I provide the display equipment?

No. Hosts are responsible for equipment. Your exhibition package includes technical specifications so hosts know what they need. The network also offers equipment recommendations and support.

What if a host damages my files?

Exhibition files are delivered via secure download. Hosts receive watermarked preview files first, then full files upon license completion. Original files remain protected on network servers.

Can I update my exhibition after it's live?

Yes. You can update documentation, promotional materials, and in some cases exhibition content. Major changes may require re-review.

Network Questions

How do you select hosts?

Hosts apply and are verified for:

  • Legitimate venue with appropriate space

  • Technical capability to display exhibitions

  • Commitment to quality presentation

  • Understanding of license terms

We accept diverse venues—cafés, universities, community centers, offices, homes, galleries—not just traditional art spaces.

What support do hosts receive?

Hosts receive:

  • Complete installation guidelines

  • Technical support via platform

  • Promotional materials

  • Verification and quality assurance

Your exhibition is presented properly because we support hosts in doing it right.

How do I know my work is being shown correctly?

Our verification node network confirms proper display. Hosts must meet quality standards to maintain network access. You can also view licensing activity and host information through your dashboard.

Is there geographic restriction?

No. Exhibitions can be licensed globally. We adjust pricing for local economies so your work can reach audiences everywhere, not just wealthy cities.

Getting Started

What's the first step?

Prepare your exhibition package with all required materials, then submit your application.

How long until I start earning?

After acceptance, onboarding takes 2-4 weeks. Once your exhibition is live, you earn whenever it's licensed. Timing depends on host interest—popular exhibitions may be licensed within days of launch.
